Giant Jack Crevalle

When To Fish For Florida Giant Jack Crevalle?

There are a lot of juvenile Jack Crevalle from 1 to 5 lbs that will arrive in mid April and will stay as long as mid to late October. The Giant Jack Crevalle will arrive with the great pods of porgies in mid May or the 1st of June. These fish will weight 18 to 45 lbs and be in schools of over 500 fish. The weather is a big factor when fishing for Giant Jack Crevalle, June, July, and August are the to best months of the year to fish for them. The weather patterns are stable, this will contribute to calm seas, light winds and bright sunny days. You will need good weather for sight fishing the Giant Jack Crevalle.

Where To Fish For Florida Giant Jack Crevalle?

Some people travel the world in search of giant fish that will strike on the surface and the good news is that these fish can be caught right here in Northeast Florida. The best location to fish Giant Jack Crevalle is Nearshore and as far as 4 to 5 miles off of the beaches. Some of the smaller Jacks 8 to 12 lbs, school and feed around the inlets and their jetties. The smallest Jack Crevalle will run the beaches in the surf, in the sounds, inlets, (ICW) Intercostals Waterways, rivers, creeks and flats, from salt water to brackish waters.

How We Will Fish For Giant Jack Crevalle?

To target the Florida Giant Jack Crevalle is a waiting game and a hunt. The waiting game means that the weather conditions have to be just right. To run in a flats boat nearshore safely, we need glassy calm seas conditions 2 ft or less on a clear sunny day and before the sea breeze picks up and the thunderstorms develop in the afternoon. We will run the beach to locate the diving pelicans to find bait pods of porgies then the hunt begins. We are sight fishing, looking for something different, like nervous water, V-wakes, or best of all fins. Mid morning as the sun warms the surface water, the Giant Jack Crevalle will daisy chain, which is circling on the surface with their fins sticking out of the water, which make their fins look like the ends of hundreds of fillet knives. Now we need to get within casting range without spooking the Giant Jacks. Our boat has a low profile and this will allow us to get a fly caster closer to the school for casting. Our choice of fly tackle is simple, 11 or 12 wt rods with floating lines, 16 or 20 lbs class tippets to a shock leader with a large sharp top water popper. Our choice for light tackle is a heavy spinning rod and reel with no less than 300 yards of 30 to 50lb braided line with a 5 ft, sixty lb fluorocarbon shock leader to a large Rapala Skitter Pop.

Why is Florida Giant Jack Crevalle Fishing Fun?

The fun in fishing Giant Jack Crevalle is in the challenge. It’s exciting to hunt, then cast, fight, land, and release this wonderful fish unharmed. This kind of fishing is not for the weak hearted, you will do battle and you will ask your self, can I win the fight? These fish will give you a serious angling challenge. But isn’t this the beauty of the sport? Nothing is as real and frightening as when you see a Giant Jack Crevalle take your plug and feel your line coming tight, you know you just hooked a train.
