Light Tackle Fishing And Fly Fishing Charters

Fernandina Beach Amelia Island and Jacksonville Fl

With Capt. Russell Tharin

Our fishing charters are based on seasons and time of tides. For your best fishing, call Capt. Russell or Janet Tharin at 904-491-4799 or use our request information online to tell us about your fishing interest and we will plan a great fishing strategy for you.

Our Types Of Fishing Charters

The reason for different types of charters is because of the tides and the interest of many anglers. The tides here on Amelia Island, Florida will range 5 to 7 ft in 6 hours, that a lot of moving water. There is a 2 week tide cycle here. One week we can have high tides in the mornings and the next week we will have low tides. Each day the tide is 1 hour later, It is important to understand the movement of fish with the tide and to have a fishing strategy to be in right place at the right time, the tide waits on no one.

Shallow Water Sight Fishing, Spin And Fly
Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall

Shallow water sight fishing for redfish on low tides with fly or spinn from daylight to mid afternoon works the best on sunny days when things cool down in the late fall and winter days. Our water will clear most of the bait fish will leave and the crabs will borrow in the soft mud. The patterns of our local redfish are usually consistent as they move with the tides, we rotate the spots so we do not condition these fish to our patterns. The approach must be slow, stealthy and quite. Casting distance is a plus, and there is nothing like seeing a 30 plus inch redfish swim up and eat your fly or jig.

Fishing With Top Water Plugs, Light Tackle
Spring, Summer, And Fall

When fishing high tides with plugs with water temperatures over 68 degrees at daylight or sunset, there's nothing like having a strike from a redfish or a trout on a top water plug. Because the water is high and the light is low our plugs will have a solute on the surface, the action will imitate and sound like a wounded or hurt baitfish, as our presentation and this will stimulate the fish to striking. This kind of fishing is done best with light tackle because of the size of the lures and large areas that can be covered.

High Flood Tides Fly Fishing, Tailing Redfish
Spring, Summer, And Fall

On the highest flood tides redfish and sheepshead will tail on the shallow water grass flats like bonefish in the keys. This is world class sight fishing at it's best and you will know this is true by the way your heart will beat. This high tide each day has a short stay with a small window and here is where fly fishing is best. Janet and I both live for the days with flood tides.

Light Tackle Spin Fishing And Fly Fishing Nassau Sound
Spring, Summer And Fall

Nassau Sound is the best fishing and most beautiful inlets in northeast Florida. To understand the sound is to understand the tides. The water will flow over large sand shoals and form great sand flats for sight fishing in the surf by wading or by sight casting from a flats boat. This works best on clear sunny days with light winds. Our target fish are redfish, spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, ladyfish, bluefish, sharks and tarpon.

Nearshore Light Tackle Spin Fishing And Fly Fishing
Spring, Summer, And Fall

The spring, summer, and fall on Amelia Island are the best seasons to sight fish along the beaches and nearshore for a variety of pelagic species like bluefish, cobia, giant jack crevalle, false albacore, ladyfish, spanish mackerel, sharks and tarpon. These fish can be found around, or under, and striking into baits pods and can be taken with fly tackle and light tackle. We can find these bait pods and striking fish on the surface by watching for diving birds. The best time to book this kind of charter is in May, June, and July for a ¾ day starting a day light and fishing till noon or before the sea breeze picks-up.
