Northeast Florida Saltwater Fishing: Saltwater Fishing Guide And Charters

Northeast Florida saltwater fishing strategies can be base on many factors. Lets look at three, the seasons, the weather and the tides. Here in Northeast Florida the seasons will determine how often the weather fronts will move though our area. The winter fronts can move through every three days, in the summer we can see fronts move through every two weeks, in late summer and fall the weather can be influents by tropical weather.

The annual water temperatures can be as low as the low fifties in the winter and as high as the lower nineties in the summer. In the winter we have less daylight and colder days this contributes to colder water temperatures with clearing waters. I love to sight fish on a calm blue bird day for redfish with light tackle or fly.

In the spring as water temperatures rises and as our bait returns our game fish such as sea trout and redfish are more active and will show more aggression. This is the time to start fishing top water plugs until it gets too cold in the late fall. Now don't get me wrong redfish and trout will take topwater plug in the winter sometimes, but as a guide I need to fish a strategy that has consistency. The best water temperatures to fish with topwater plugs are as low as 66 degrees to as high as 90 degrees. Early daylight and calm cloudy days are the best. The best time to fly fish is at daylight on a cool day with no wind.

One of the biggest factors in fishing inshore Northeast Florida is our tides. We may not know what the weather will be for the day, but we will know the tide and this knowledge is very important to us so as to be in the right place at the right time. The tides here on Amelia Island, Florida will range from 5 ft to 7 ft in 61/2 hours, that's a lot of moving water. There is a 2-week tide cycle here. One week we can have high tides in the mornings and the next week we will have low tides. Each day the tide is 1 hour later, it's important to understand the movement of fish with the tide and to have a fishing strategy to be in right place at the right time, the tide waits on no one. It's best for the fly fisherman to target the low tide at daylight for the best sight fishing for redfish, trust me and it's a great thing that we can fish redfish and trout here in Northeast Florida saltwater all year round.
