Fly Casting Lessons

Capt. Russell Tharin a graduate of the Joan Wulff Fly Fishing Instructors School
and
Master Certified Instructor by the Federation of Fly Fishers

"Learning how to make a loop, is the first step in Fly Casting
and with practice, you can Fly Fish in any waters of the world."
Capt. Russell Tharin

I am passionate about fly fishing, and it is my goal to help everyone understand how his or her fly rod works. It is very important if you want to learn to fly fish that you learn how to fly cast. Only the caster will understand the real joy of the sport. Fly fishing is no different than any other sport that requires lessons. If you want to try golf or tennis, it’s best to take lessons first. You will want to understand the proper mechanics and sound principals of modern fly casting. Understand the terms used in fly casting, learn casting drills, make your fly casting instinctive, and learn how to fight fish too. This sport is so much fun, so take advantage of the time to work with Capt. Russell before you get out on the water.

How do I prepare for my fly fishing charter?

If you have never fly fished from a flats skiff in saltwater we strongly suggest you take a fly casting lesson prior to your charter. This will greatly enhance your ability to land fish. A 1-hour fly casting lesson prior to your day on the water builds confidence as it increases teamwork between angler and guide. It’s a great time to work on casting mechanics, casting principals, and learn terminologies before we get on the water.

If you have been fly fishing in freshwater and never fly fished saltwater from a flats boat, a good start would be to take an 2-hour advance casting lessons. To learn how to cast to moving targets, learn how to cast in the wind, to double haul, to cast for distance. Learn how to set the hook, and fight big game fish on fly tackle. These are things that are very hard to learn on a charter, and you will find practicing before your charter will be a big payoff.
