Capt. Russell Tharin's Testimonials

Here's what some of our anglers have said:

  • Captain Russell, thank you for your time and knowledge that you shared with me Saturday morning. I have been fishing a long time and always enjoy the company of a well skilled and knowledgeable guide as yourself. I love to learn as much as I can from someone that can present different techniques and spread light on fish patterns and water conditions. It is not always about catching but taking the skills and knowledge we gather from others that make us that much better in life and on the water. I look forward to fishing with you in September. If I can ever help you or be of any assistance please let me know, until September Tight lines and good times.
    Rod Sharp Statesboro, Georgia.

  • I'm still riding the buzz of that awesome trip! I really enjoyed our conversation about fishing, birds, ecosystems, conservation, the economy and bureacrats -- all good stuff! Equally enjoyable was the wild ride leading to an epic conclusion. Few people understand the individual who could spend the time and energy to set forth on a quest to catch one fish. Fewer can understand how that person could consider it an event of a lifetime to simply catch that one fish . . . and then release him back to the wild; and only a handful of true believers could comprehend a Captain willing to put in the time and effort to make that event possible. Truly appreciate your hard work, patience and persistence. It was a great HUNT and one that will carry me through to next time we visit. Looking forward to doing it again in the future. Cheers and good fishing!
    Paul Peditto Annapolis, Maryland.

  • Having fished with no less that 20 guides across the America's as well as the Caribbean I by no means have it all figured out, I do however know a great fishing experience. I can tell you that I had an outstanding experience with this expert and first class gentleman. I initially discovered Capt. Russell on the web----made a few calls to the locals and they confirmed that he was the reel deal. In light of this I scheduled three trips for my week in Amelia Island. Two days were canceled, not necessarily due to weather as I saw a number of other guides out-----they were canceled due to Capt. Russell telling me "if you insist we will go however the conditions are not right and I really do not want to take your money----I want to put you on the trophy fish you requested." This was a level integrity that I have witnessed only a time or two prior in similar situations; at this point, I knew I had selected the right guide. The day we did get out was beyond fantastic-----he picked me up at the resort on time-----with a meticulously maintained / clean rig-----having state of the art equipment / tackle aboard. We were on the water in minutes with Capt. Russell having an uncanny understanding of the conditions, where we were going---what we were fishing for and exactly what tackle and technique we were going use to get fish in the boat. We were on several very fine Red Fish within a half hour. In addition to being an expert guide I can attest that he is an expert teacher as well-----his patience with me as I learned how to hunt these evasive fish (if you enjoy fishing for Bone Fish give these babies a shot-----equally as exciting / challenging) was amazing. Bottom line---Capt. Russell Tharin "gets it"----absolutely First Class experience, from the learning---to the fishing---to the conversation with what is clearly a very intelligent individual. I would recommend the gentleman to a beginner or the toughest of "expert" critics----the day truly turned out to be one, if not the, best guided fishing experiences I have ever had. Thanks Capt. Russell Tharin---a pleasure to have met and spent a day on the water with such a wonderful ambassador to the world of guided sport fishing.
    Ken Long Grand Rapids, Michigan.

  • I've fished with them all, (guides) all over the world and Capt. Russell is among the best.
Ray Mendez New York, New York.

  • I have fished throughout North America aggressively over the last decade and with plenty of guides and aspiring guides. I feel quite comfortable saying that Capt. Russell is among the best. This is not just because of his willingness to spend more time than scheduled. He was quite knowledgeable about the species and their migratory patterns. He was also able to succinctly offer tips to improve my casting. Based on my experience, I felt compelled to write you and inform you of Capt. Russell's excellence.
    Geoffrey Bennett

  • Just want to let you know that I had a great time and enjoyed your instruction. You have started me on a great quest and one which will be a continued pleasure for me to be involved in. I am looking forward to our next trip and will be much more prepared to fish with you in the future. Must be tough to take someone like me that is a clean slate and try to create a plan for a person that has no background in the sport. You did a great job.
    Robert Zipperer Silver Creek, Georgia.

  • An excellent ambassador for Orvis and Amelia Island.
Mark Ward owner of The Everglades Angler Outfitters Naples, Florida.

  • I want to thank you for the great time me, Bucky Jr. and Quinton had last Saturday. I have been with many guides, both hunting and fishing, and you are by far the most personable one I have ever had, not to mention your expertise in finding the fish in such terrible conditions. I was very impressed with the way you handled Quinton, letting him pull in the fish and treating him as if he were your own son. I look forward to returning to Amelia and fishing with you, again, soon.
Bucky Payne Sr Winter Haven, Florida.

  • Wow!! What a great business meeting we just ended in Fernandina. I am confident in saying that your presentation and fishing charter had significant impact on the success of our meeting. Beginning with your presentation at Espana over dinner and ending with our after fishing coffee, your ability to help me motivate my team into focusing on what it takes to be the best at what we do was exceptional. Every member of my team stated how inspirational your personal reflections and story was. Your presentation clearly focused on areas doing what you love, having persistence, and being a student always learning more about your work that I have been reinforcing as the team manager. While the weather was not totally cooperative, we all had a great time fishing with you. I am already planning on a return trip and another outing with you. Thanks again for your services and keep up the great work.
    Larry Cabot Peachtree City, Georgia.

  • Great guide, I learned a lot!!!
    Adrian Romero Seboyeta, New Mexico.

  • Russell was a hard worker and put us on the fish.
    Brent Peters Orefield, Pennsylvania.

  • It is always fun watching a master guide such as Russell work - he has a keen ability to read subtle changes in the surface that indicate a school of reds is present. I can easily see a wake or tail pop up, but this skill is different. Also, he sure can humble you with his fly casting ability which is as long and accurate as I can get with the spinning rod. I highly suggest that any club members who want to learn more about our sport book a charter with Russell. He is a great teacher and the marsh up there is awesome. We saw three bald eagles and a triton sub to boot!
